Seniors Fitness

Exercise, as important in senior years as any other time in life.

Through hands on experience, I have become somewhat of an authority on seniors exercise. Now, I'm not talking to the 55-65 age group, even though you can get the seniors discount at the movies. I'm mostly talking to the 65+ crowd. I don't claim to know all there is to know, but this is what I do know. Exercise is essential for senior's, but there are several precautions that should be taken first. Everyone, has an individual level of fitness that is unique to them and this is true particularity with seniors. Take into account that you might have certain limitations, conditions or medications that will directly impact the amount of activity your perform. Make sure your instructor is aware of any limitations.

There are four main areas, that I can see where senior citizens should focus while exercising. These include improving balance, improving flexibility, improving stamina, and toning muscles thereby increasing bone strength, and appetite. Additionally, it's been my experience to observe that regular exercise helps senior citizens by improving their mood. Because exercise helps to promote a sense of well being by helping to regulate hydration and hormones. Since boredom, loneliness, and even depression can plague senior citizens, exercise can be such a great, pastime. Seniors that begin to embrace a healthy lifestyle, that incorporates regular exercise, and a healthy diet will see their body and self image begin to change. Promoting greater self esteem, confidence, and allowing you to enjoy more activities.

Now anyone should always check with your health care provider before beginning any workout program, and that goes double for seniors. I know you knew that but I'm just reminding you. If you have any type of chronic conditions, pains or illnesses ask your health care provider for recommendations regarding exercises that would be best for your situation. Safety is of the utmost importance, and you should heed any warning signs that something might be wrong. These include feeling any type of pain in the chest area when working out, developing shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, having a irregular or unusually rapid heartbeat. You should contact your health care provider regarding any questions or concerns that you might have as it is always best to proceed with caution. Exercise can not only prolong your quality of life, but can ensure that you get more enjoyment from every day. Good Luck...
