Moringa

Moringa is considered to be the most nutrient rich plant on earth.

The world's greatest unknown super food, Moringa leaves have been consumed by Asian people for a millennia. Moringa is a vegetable tree that is extremely nutritious and has many potential and healthy uses. The tree contains more than 90 nutrients and 46 antioxidants, the vivid green leaves are nature's true super food. Science is only now realizing that Moringa tree leaf is the source of incredible health benefits. It's the ultimate, natural, organic, energy and endurance health supplement. There are plenty of studies that describe these benefits. The pure, powdered, moringa leaf is the most potent part of the plant. Gram for gram, Moringa leaves contain approximately:
  • 7 times the vitamin C in oranges
  • 14 times the calcium in milk
  • 4 times the vitamin A in carrots
  • 2 times the protein in milk and yogurt
  • 3 times the potassium in bananas
  • 9 times the iron of spinach
  • 4 times the fiber in oats
Today it is widely cultivated in Africa, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Philippines, Central and South America, and Sri Lanka. Moringa is considered one of the world’s most useful trees, every part of the moringa tree can be used for food or has some other beneficial property. A wide variety of products are made from various parts of the plant including the leaves, seeds, roots and bark. Some of the products you may find that include Moringa Oleifera are, food supplements, teas, oils, shampoos, soaps, skin care products and perfumes.

According to Dr. Monica G. Marcu, researcher and clinical pharmacologist, Moringa is unique because, "even in small amounts, it can supply daily a wide gamut of vital nutrients with few calories." Dr. Lowell Fuglie, based in Senegal and considered as one of the experts about Moringa says that to date there has not been any known negative side effect even in the daily consumption of Moringa. Vitamin and mineral content are just the beginning. Moringa has 18 amino acids, including the eight essentials, the ones your body can not survive without but can not manufacture on its own. They must be supplied through diet. Moringa is as good a source of roughage as carrots but has quadruple the beta carotene content. It also has plenty of omega-3 oils and chlorophyll, plus 45 compounds with antioxidant properties and 36 with anti-inflammatory properties. To the "average Joe", Moringa is a simple way to manage many health problems. It can help reduce cholesterol and triglycerides, control blood sugar, and offer anti-aging and anti-inflammatory substances, many of which have anti-cancer properties. Some of the benefits of Moringa Leaf include:

  •  Increases the Natural Defenses of the body
  •  Provides eyes and brain health
  •  Promotes metabolism with bio-available ingredients.
  •  Promotes natural Serum cholesterol.
  •  Lowers the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
  •  Promotes the normal functioning of the liver and the kidney.
  •  Beautifies the skin.
  •  Promotes energy.
  •  Promotes proper digestion.
  •  Acts as an antioxidant.
  •  Promotes healthy circulatory system.
  •  It is an anti-inflammatory.
  •  Gives a feeling of general wellness.
  •  Supports the normal sugar levels of the body.

In Siddha medicines, one of the oldest medical systems known to mankind, that  originated from Indian Tamil traditional medicine, Moringa seeds are used as a sexual virility drug for treating erectile dysfunction in men and also in women for prolonging sexual activity. Moringa leaves and pods are helpful in increasing breast milk in the breastfeeding months. One tablespoon of leaf powder will provide 14% of the protein, 40% of the calcium, 23% of the iron and most of the vitamin "A" needs, of a child aged one to three. Six tablespoons of leaf powder will provide nearly all of a woman's daily iron and calcium needs during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Another property of the Moringa leaf is it's soothing ability, because of which it can lower the blood pressure and promotes good sleep. The outcome is more sustained energy, balanced hormone and gland system, controlled blood pressure, and a rested nervous system.

The Moringa seeds yield 38–40% edible oil (called ben oil from the high concentration of behenic acid contained in the oil). The refined oil is clear and odorless and resists rancidity at least as well as any other botanical oil. The seed cake remaining after oil extraction may be used as a fertilizer or as a flocculent to purify water. In Jamaica, the tree sap is used for a blue dye. The flowers are also cooked and relished as a delicacy in West Bengal and Bangladesh, especially during early spring. There it is dish called shojne ful and is usually cooked with green peas and potato. Leaves can be eaten fresh, cooked, or stored as dried powder for many months without refrigeration, and reportedly without loss of nutritional value. The fruit of the tree is quite popular as a vegetable in Asia and Africa. The fruit is a long thin pod resembling a drum stick. Now this I also find very interesting, extract from the seeds is used as a flocculant, a low-cost form of water treatment. In February 2010, Current Protocols in Microbiology published a step by step extraction and treatment procedure to produce "90.00% to 99.99%" bacterial reduction in water. The seeds are also considered an excellent biofuel source for making biodiesel.

So ponder this, the Moringa leaf is comparatively an unheard name in spite of the fact that it has been found mentioned in writings for more than two thousand years. The World Health Organization has been observing and utilizing the tree for more than forty years now as a cheap health supplement in the poverty-stricken countries the world over. I think we all know the reason behind this. The selling of all kinds of health supplements, minerals and vitamins is a lucrative business. No big company would ever take the risk of introducing a product that could potentially harm and lower the sale of all other nutritional items. The same holds water for the pharmaceutical companies too. These huge companies would prefer to keep the general public in the dark about the benefits of the Moringa leaf, to make big bucks developing a derivative that can be sold by prescription only. What saves us is the information network "The Web" all we need do is read, and get get some Moringa with haste. As always do a little homework and choose an organic product. I don't often recommend sites but this company seems top noch. http://www.moringasource.com/moringa-seeds.php Good Luck...
